TK Educator Series -

AGENDA

In this 3-part series, participants will engage in a reflective and interactive experience to learn, discuss, reflect and plan. Session topics include:

Session 1

  • What is TK? What’s new?

  • What is important to know about TK children?

    • Alignment of California Preschool Learning Foundations w/ California Kindergarten Content Standards

    • Developmental continuum

  • What is the role of the teacher to support children’s growth and development?

    • Developmentally appropriate learning experiences

    • Observation, documentation & reflection

Session 2

  • The TK classroom

    • Developmentally, linguistically, and culturally appropriate learning environments

    • Universal design for learning in TK

    • Practical examples and strategies

  • Implementing curriculum in TK

    • Developmentally, linguistically, and culturally appropriate learning experiences

    • Resources and curriculum alignment

Session 3

  • Implementing curriculum in TK (continued)

    • Practical examples and strategies

    • Working as a teaching team

  • Reflective cycle: observation, documentation, assessment, reflection, planning

  • Family partnerships and cultural context

  • Planning & problem-solving

Content is research-based and aligned to the California Department of Education’s TK guidance and resources, UPK plan, and P-3 framework; California Preschool Learning Foundations; and California Common Core Standards (check for K).

Participants will discuss practical information and strategies for implementing developmentally appropriate learning experiences and environments; conducting observation-based assessments; and supporting social-emotional development, dual language learners, and children with special needs. Topics also include working as a teaching team, partnerships with families, and transition to kindergarten.

Core Learning Targets

  • Build awareness, knowledge, and strategies in inquiry and project-based learning

  • Develop skills to create and design inclusive, long-term investigations and provocations throughout the year

  • Develop strategies to create documentation that includes and makes visible the CA Preschool Learning Foundations; DRDP measures; and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) indicators

 

Content Alignment

  • Content throughout the series is aligned with the Quality Counts CA and CDE Early Learning and Care Division quality improvement strategies and resources, including the CA Preschool and Infant/Toddler Learning Foundations & Curriculum Frameworks, DRDP, and ERS.

  • Strategies for engaging families through inquiry an projects will be discussed throughout the series.

  • Vignettes and artifacts to spotlights implementation of inquiry and project-based learning will be shared, in partnershp with the Center of Gravity early education lab school.
